Reusable Checklists
Checklists are a great way for getting things done. If you have experience and are known for getting things done and getting things done right, perhaps you have a good internal checklist. So why create a checklist? Checklists will help others who do not have this internal checklist, it will help them clear up any uncertainty and reduce any complexity regards completing a task or project by use of that checklist.
Checklists aimed at routine tasks makes sense. They allow your projects to be completed without missing anything. Creating checklists for more complex projects is even more important as sometimes there are many tasks, and tasks required which are hard to remember.
It is often hard to find time to remember all the tasks required for a certain project, especially if at your work you are used to dealing with multiple different types of projects. And why waste time documenting it every time.
It's a very good reminder to have a checklist to remind you of the complexity of the task, and the checklist will remind you why some things take more time than you think they should.
As an explain lets say you had to organise a training course, simple, a few steps you might thing. Take a look at our training checklist, you may see there are a few more considerations than your initially thought.
Over time if you have the list stored electronically it can be modified and updated to ensure that the items to be checked are still applicable, based on this time and the experience put into the list, the checklist will evolve to be much more accurate and one day become perfect.
A great book on the usefulness of checklists is Atul Gawande's The Checklist Manifesto, take a look.
