A travel based packing list to help and assist you to remember what to pack in your suitcase or rucksack when planning a holiday or vacation.

Packing checklist

This vacation planning check list is a generally based, containing items for all types of vacations. A few weeks before packing ensure you have all the items, it is not nice to explain to someone else the items you have forgot. Additionally when packing imagine to yourself your suitcase will get lost, so no valuables. Money, passports, insurance and visa are most important, the rest you should be able to work though in an emergency. When packing put the things you will need to travel in a separate pile to make things simple, and enjoy getting ready for your holiday as much as your holiday, and remember not to take any liquids/scissors etc in your hand luggage and to keep some money spare to buy water after customs.
Cross items no required, tick items completed, circle items left to do.

Ahead of the trip ensure an itinerary is worked out.

Ahead of the trip ensure there is a hair dryer and iron in the room is required.

Ahead of trip all inbound/outbound connections are understood.

Ahead of trip ensure inbound and outbound taxis or car-parking is organised.

Ahead of trip, ensure a buying list is created for shop/duty free/list/plane.

To ensure any last items are collected. (Though try to ensure these are collected in advance).

Ahead, if celebration planned while on holiday, ensure cards/gifts bought for trip.

Arrange an overseas mobile data/call packages.

Bank : Ahead of time inform bank/credit card company you are going overseas.

Bank : Cash For Taxi/Buses (including in and outbound).

Bank : Credit Card, more than one if possible.

Bank : Debit card, more than one if possible.

Bank : Emergency cash.

Bank : Foreign currency if required.

Bank : Gadgets : Required sometimes to log into online accounts.

Bank : Hold back local currency for departure taxes if required.

General : Address/Mobile number in baggage (Address of work place not house if possible).

General : Books/magazines for reading.

General : Business cards.

General : Check fire alarms on and working (ensure neighbour knows what to do in event).

General : Check house (inside and outside) plugs are out.

General : Check passport and visa are valid.

General : Clean up for when back inc. Bins and removal of perishables.

General : Clear Fridge of anything that will decay is fridge is being left turned on (not advised if possible and Fridge without used freezer compartment etc).

General : Close all internal doors and ensure smoke detectors primed.

General : Compass (if going walking).

General : Contact list (and send to email box).

General : Cut nails.

General : Cutlery (e.g. Plastic spares including small teaspoon).

General : DVD/playlist and film and music downloads.

General : Emergency numbers.

General : Ensure all windows closed.

General : Ensure any meetings scheduled whilst away are rescheduled.

General : Ensure any out of office messages set on work email system.

General : Ensure anything that can be affected by adverse weather (Sun, rain, wind) is secured.

e.g. Any external/internal water pipes lagged, stop tapped if leaving in cold weather, e.g. any trees/garden ornaments secured if going away in windy weather.

General : Ensure home looks occupied with darkness operated lights etc.

General : Favourite food and drink.

General : Find out duty free limits.

General : Flask.

General : Flight details to family.

General : Haircut/Grooming.

General : Heating : Turn down and to holiday cycle, i.e. not on all time, enough to keep house warm and importantly above zero if winter.

General : House keys.

General : Instant Coffee and/or Tea Creamer and Stirrer.

General : Layout going away clothes the day before.

General : Lock external doors/outbuildings/shed etc.

General : Maps.

General : Organise house sitter if required.

General : Overseas Car Insurance.

General : Overseas Medical Cards.

General : Pack Of Cards.

General : Padlocks.

General : Photocopy Fights and keep separate to originals.

General : Photocopy, print and email yourself passport/Visas and keep separate to originals.

General : Place hotel details on a piece of paper to give to taxi driver if required.

General : Plan arrange trip to/from Airport.

General : Post any outstanding letters.

General : Provisions/Snacks (E.g. Sweets/Nuts/Chocolate).

Can also be useful for where you are stuck and no shop available. i.e. A plane not taking off on time, e.g. landing on a day where the shops are closed at your destination etc.

General : Put any burglar alarms required on e.g. Home/shed.

General : Puzzle books for plane/beach.

General : Set alarm clock is set for day of departure (if weekend ensure alarm is set for weekend). Ensure more than one alarm is set.

General : Smoke : If one of 9 smokers left in world, ensure you are taking enough cigarettes.
