When is the next meteor shower? Meteor showers or shooting stars occur when a comet comes close to the sun and produces debris which you can sometimes see from the Earth.A meteor shower appears as a series of shooting lights in the sky. Most meteors are ridiculously small, like a ball bearing. They burn up when they enter Earth’s atmosphere about one hundred miles up, a few larger ones do make it sometimes through the atmosphere, as meteorites.
Most meteor showers originate from comets or asteroids. As a comet orbits the Sun it sheds an icy, dusty debris stream along its orbit. If Earth travels through this stream, we will see a meteor shower. Although the meteors can appear and you can find them anywhere in the sky, if you trace their paths, the meteors in each shower appear in the sky from the same region.
The following list represents a meteor shower calendar and the peak times of the showers which sometimes run before and after these dates.
