Buying a second hand car can be a risky business, it pays to do as much investigation about the history and condition of the car as you can. Engines and electrics can prove costly if you have to fix those after you have purchased the car. This list can be used by you when buying a second:hand car from dealers and private sellers, gives some guidance on what to look for on a test drive, and then doing the deal. This is a free checklist to remind you of some of the common things to check for that tricky car purchase. It is a simple as that.

Do all lights and windscreen wipers/washers work correctly and no squeaking?

Do all the locks, including central locking and remote control, work properly?

Do all windows, including any sunroof, open/close normally?

Is the oil level right?

Is the oil golden coloured and free of small particles?

Any abnormal noises when the engine is started?

Do all the warning lights operate normally?

Any signs of excessive visible exhaust emissions?

Do all the controls operate correctly – heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, radio/CD?

Any signs of fluid leaks under the car?

On a test drive is braking normal, even, and noiseless?

On a test drive does the car pull to one side when braking?

On a test drive is there any steering vibration or pull to one side?

On a test drive does the clutch operate normally?

Is the handbrake effective?

Will it be supplied with all the right keys?

Will the car be supplied with warranty?

Is the warranty extensive?

Are there any warning lights showing on the dash after starting he car?

Do you have an idea of the make, model and age you are targeting?

Is the budget you have affordable for the car?

Is the amount of tax you will pay affordable for the car?

Is the amount of insurance you will need to pay for the car acceptable?

What mileage does the car have, is that sensible and does it look right?

Does the price of the car compare with similar models with that type of mileage?

Do the car’s logbook and service history, looks ok?

Do any previous MOT certificates supplied look ok?

Is there evidence of recent emissions tests and do they look ok?

Is there a registration document?

Is the mileage shown on the registration document an service documents consistent to what it is now?

Does the vehicle identification number, engine number and colour match the registration document?

Does the number plate match the registration document?

Is there a current MOT certificate and it lasts for a number of months?

Is the car taxed and the tax lasts for a number of months?

Has the cam belt been replaced according to the service schedule?

Does the paintwork of the car look consistent?

Is minimal or no bubbling paint work and rust?

Are the gaps between the car panels are the same width?

After pressing car at each corner does it return to the normal height?

Are the tyres and in good condition.

Are the alloy wheels if applicable in good condition?

When you close the boot does it catch first time?

Is there a spare wheel?

Is the car jack and tools present?

Check the seat belts operate correctly?
