TOPS Train Classifications - List

The numbering system for British locomotives dates from the early 70s. It is named after the computer system TOPS (Total Operations Processing System).

Locomotives carry five or six digit numbers. The last three digits identify individual locomotives or locomotives within sub:classes. The first two or three depending on whether the train number is a five or six digit number is the TOPS Class, which identifies the different types of locomotive.

TOPS Train Classifications

Class 70-79 : Single Unit : Direct Current Electric and electro:diesel locomotive

Class 80-96 : Single Unit : Alternating Current electric locomotive

Class 97-97 : Single Unit : Departmental locomotive (non:revenue earning)

Class 98-98 : Single Unit : Steam locomotive

Class 99-99 : Single Unit : Shipping fleet

Class 200-299 : Multiple Unit : Diesel : Electric transmission

Class 400-499 : Multiple Unit : Electric : Southern Region Direct Current third rail

Class 500-599 : Multiple Unit : Electric : Other Direct Current

Class 600-699 : Multiple Unit : Diesel :

Class 800-899 : Multiple Unit : High speed multiple unit / fixed formation

Class 900-999 : Multiple Unit : Departmental multiple units (non:revenue earning)
