The Three Roots Of Evil - List
These are all negative states of consciousness and are sometimes called the three poisons or three fires. All unwholesome or negative states of mind (kleshas) are variations on these three themes, they drive our suffering as seen with the second noble truth. The three roots of evil are sometimes seen as a summary of the five poisons i.e. where desire & ignorance are summarized as raga, anger and desire are summarized as dvesa, and delusion as moha. The practice of all the bodhisattvas is to avoid destructive things, those in whose company the three poisons of the mind grow stronger, as by not avoiding them we engage less and less in study, reflection and meditation and so love and compassion fade away until they are no more. Often, O monks, should one reflect upon one’s own mind thus: “For a long time has this mind been defiled by greed, by hatred, by delusion.” Mental defilements make beings impure, mental cleansing purifies them. (Samyutta Nikita). It is impossible to overcome birth, old age and death without overcoming another three things, namely: greed, hatred and delusion. (Anguttara Nikaya).
The Three Roots Of Evil
01. Greed, passion, desire or lust. (rāga or lobha).
By relinquishing greed, in its place arises contentment. Oftentimes represented in Buddhist art by a rooster.
02. Hatred, aversion, aggression, anger or destructive urges (dveṣa or dosa)
By relinquishing hatred, in its place arises open heartedness. Oftentimes represented in Buddhist art by a snake.
03. Delusion, ignorance or indifference. (moha).
Recognize delusion, whenever one is confronted by adversity or misfortune for these sufferings and delusory perceptions are so exhausting to cling onto as real. By relinquishing ignorance, in its place arises clear seeing into the nature of things and into the causes of suffering and the path to freedom. This root of evil can be found represented in Buddhist art by a pig.
