The pillars five pillars are mentioned in the Quran, however, in various chapters (Sura), and further insights concerning these commitments are given in the hadith, or sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad.
The pillars vary between Sunni and Shia, Shia Islam Twelver has five pillars, Usul al Din and ten practices, Furu al Din,

The statement of Islamic faith, There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger, must be able to be recited with sincerity.

Ritual prayers must be perfomed, in the proper way, five times each day.

2.5% of ones wealth should be given to the poor (in terms of cash, gold and silver, and commercial items (there are other rates for farm and mining produce, and for animals)).

There must be fasting during the month of Ramadan.

A pilgrimage to Mecca must be made a least once in a lifetime if it is physically possible and can be afforded.
