Like preparation you make for an employees first day, you will need to prepare for the their last. Ensure you have procedures in place for guiding the employee though his or her termination, and procedures for housekeeping just before they leave. Consider preparing and then using a checklist or off boarding guide such as the one below, and most importantly make this process as easy as possible for the employee as people will ask them what it was like to work with you, if they are able to say a pleasure where everything worked smoothly, all the better. Collect honest feedback which will help you with your business, if managed correctly the employee might even return one day bring you back a new set of skills.

Employee Leaving Checklist

During employee leaving : Ensure their line manager, the human resources department and IT is informed.

During employee leaving : Ensure the employees team is made aware.

During employee leaving : Ensure a handover has been organised if someone if taking over the responsibilities in the interim. Ensure coverage of daily routine, repeated processes, systems accessed, files accessed, important contacts.

During employee leaving : Start the recruiting process for a replacement.

During employee leaving : Ensure there is a written resignation or termination letter which identifies the resignation date, or the termination date, the reason for leaving and ensure that this documentation has been filed.
